Over the course of the past week, Shorlu spends less time with Hammer Squad, electing to check up on Ryder. The pachyderm seems lost in thought even when he does come back to help the clones here and there. Eventually, he feels encouraged to explain his thoughts after one too many of Andy's 'Jedi Mind Trick' cocktails.
"Remember when I told ya about how I was almost married? I didn't tell you guys the whole story, so pipe down and listen to me ramble for a minute...."
"Back before the Clone Wars, I worked for IntSec. Handled all kinds a' cases, all of 'em interesting, kept me coming back for more. They said I was a natural, and I liked solving a good puzzle, so it really kept me going. Great way to get your daily cred, doin' what you love. 'Least, that's how I started off. But when I started asking questions like, what was happening with some of the perps I caught after they got taken away, and why we were getting contributions from senators to stay offa their homeworlds, they started stonewallin' me more and more. But the pay was good, and we needed it." He stops to take a big swig of another drink before continuing.
"Anyway, 'round that time, I met Phu'ri. Like I said, Chadra-Fan, cutest thing on two legs, yadda yadda. She was a journalist, covering one a' my more fun cases. You think I'm a snoop sometimes, I'm nothin' compared to her! We hit it off, spent years together before I finally popped the question. After we got engaged, though, things started to go downhill. Intsec was starting to pay me just to look the other way on a lotta stuff back in those days, and when the Empire took over, they started kowtowing to 'em like crazy. Phu'ri, of course, found out about the cases I'd been told to close, and -bam!- walked out on me. Said she couldn't stand being around me a second longer. Ain't seen her since." (edited)
